Meissen, town and castle

Once upon a time Meissen was the place where the strong and powerful reigned – the margraves and bishops of the region. The castle mountain with its two palaces and the dome was a political centre for more than 500 years. Even the emporor visited! The town at the bottom of the mountain was wealthy. Today the small alleyways around the market square and the old stairways take you right back to those times hundreds of years ago. All over the world Meissen is famous for its china factory where August the Strong’s ‚White Gold‘ has been produced for 300 years. Even older is the winegrowing in the area, which is still shaping the landscape around Meissen. There is also lots to see and hear about the country and its people on the journey to Meissen.

Please note: Early registration recommended for visiting the china factory. Entrance fees for the factory, the castle or the dome to be paid locally.
